Days 2 - 3 At leisure with two included excursions
INCLUDED EXCURSIONS
Shibden Hall & Halifax
An included visit takes you to the distinctive half-timbered Shibden Hall, home of the Lister family for over 300 years and notably of the 19th century diarist, landowner and businesswoman, Anne Lister. Her remarkable life was dramatised in the recent BBC series, 'Gentleman Jack' starring Suranne Jones and Shibden Hall was one of the main filming locations of the show. A land train is included to shuttle you up the steep path from the car park to the house and back. There may be a short wait but there is a cafe and toilets in the parking area.
Continue into Halifax, once the heart of England's woollen industry and home to some of the region's best-preserved Victorian and Georgian landmarks. It is well worth taking time out to get to know this charming Yorkshire market town with its inimitable character and historical vitality. Be sure to pop into the handsome 15th Century Minster (where Anne Lister is buried) to enjoy the beautiful interiors complete with painted wooden ceiling panels. Star of the show must surely be the magnificent Piece Hall. A unique Grade I listed Georgian masterpiece, it is the oldest remaining cloth hall in Britain. Following a multi-million pound transformation project, it is now a world class cultural and leisure destination with its grand open-air courtyard surrounded by a mix of independent galleries, shops, cafes and restaurants. Delve deeper into its captivating past with a local heritage guide who will lead you through the grand colonnades and regale you with tales of its fascinating 250-year history.
Calderdale Explorer & Haworth
Enjoy a day out in beautiful Calderdale, the southernmost of the Yorkshire Dales and part of the beautiful South Pennines area of river valleys, moorland and hill country. The Rochdale Canal and Calder & Hebble Navigation meet at Sowerby Bridge and the Wharf area is the heart of the town's great food and drink offering. The town has featured in the hit series, 'Happy Valley' starring Sarah Lancashire as strong-willed police sergeant, Catherine Cawood. Just down the road and surrounded by breathtaking countryside, the beguiling town of Hebden Bridge is known for its arty and creative identity. If its winding streets look familiar, it is because this quirky and charismatic town has caught the eye of many a TV and film director, propelling it to star status. Some of the films and shows made here include Sharpe, Swallows & Amazons and of course, Happy Valley. A final stop in charming Haworth, surrounded by wild and atmospheric moorland, where its quaint cobbled main street lined by pretty independent stores makes you feel as though you have stepped back in time. Home to the Bronte sisters, Haworth village is where Wuthering Heights characters Cathy and Heathcliff were born and where Jane Eyre came to life.
Day 4 With fond memories of your weekend head back to interchange with an interesting stop on the way
